Why May Is the Last Window Before Hajj

May is the final stretch of the Umrah season for UK pilgrims. Each year the Umrah season pauses ahead of Hajj, so May is the last realistic month to perform Umrah before visas stop being issued and the focus shifts to the Hajj pilgrims. It is still good value and quieter than the Ramadan peak, but the weather is warming quickly toward the summer heat. If you want to perform Umrah in the first half of the year and miss the summer, May is your last comfortable opportunity — and it sells out as the cut-off approaches.

May, the Umrah Season and the Hajj Cut-Off

The Umrah season runs through most of the Islamic year and then closes for several weeks around Hajj, in the month of Dhul-Hijjah, before reopening afterwards. Hajj falls around 26 May 2026 and around 16 May 2027, so the Umrah season typically closes in early-to-mid May in both years — Umrah visa holders must complete their pilgrimage and leave before the announced deadline. This makes a May Umrah genuinely time-limited: book an early-May departure and we will confirm the latest available date for your year. After Hajj, departures resume from around July — see our the July window.

Late-May Half-Term for UK Families

The UK late-May (Whitsun) half-term — a week at the end of May — can be a family Umrah window, but only in years when it falls before the Hajj cut-off. Where the dates allow, a 7-night package fits the break and lets parents travel with children without missing school. Because the cut-off and half-term sit close together in May, these dates are tight and book up fast, so confirm early. See our family-friendly Umrah.

May Weather: Warming Toward Summer

May is late spring turning to early summer in Saudi Arabia, noticeably hotter than April. Daytime temperatures in Makkah average 36-42°C (97-108°F), and Madinah is a little cooler at 32-38°C (90-100°F). Nights stay warm at 25-28°C (77-82°F). The midday heat is strong, so perform Tawaf in the early morning or after sunset, stay hydrated, and use the air-conditioned areas of the Haram. Light, loose clothing, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle are essential.

Is May Good Value for Umrah?

Yes — May is one of the better-value months, as it sits in the low season before the Hajj closure, so fares and hotel rates are well below the Ramadan and summer peaks, from around £699 per person. It is not quite the single cheapest month (the quiet mid-winter weeks of January usually edge it), but it offers strong value with smaller crowds. For the lowest prices in any month, see our cheaper packages, or the cheapest-month detail on our the January window.

Best Ziyarat Sites to Visit in May

May's heat means guided Ziyarat — the tours of historical Islamic sites — is best done in the early morning or evening. Every May package includes guided Ziyarat in both holy cities. Around Makkah you visit Jabal al-Nour (the Cave of Hira), the Cave of Thawr, Jabal Arafat and Mina; a Taif trip to the cooler mountains is especially welcome in May. In Madinah the tour covers Masjid Quba (the first mosque in Islam), Masjid al-Qiblatain, Mount Uhud and Jannat al-Baqi. For the rituals themselves — entering Ihram, performing Tawaf around the Kaaba and Sa'i between Safa and Marwah — an English-speaking guide assists you on arrival at Al-Masjid al-Haram.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is May a good month for Umrah?
Yes — May offers good value and smaller crowds and is the last comfortable window before the Umrah season closes for Hajj. The trade-off is rising heat, so it suits pilgrims who want to travel in the first half of the year and avoid the summer.
Is May the last month for Umrah before Hajj?
Usually, yes. The Umrah season closes ahead of Hajj each year, and with Hajj around 26 May 2026 and 16 May 2027, the season typically ends in early-to-mid May. After that, Umrah visas pause until after Hajj.
When does the Umrah season close before Hajj?
Saudi Arabia suspends Umrah visas for several weeks around Hajj (the month of Dhul-Hijjah) and reopens afterwards, usually from around July. The exact last date is announced each year — tell us your dates and we'll confirm the latest available May departure.
Can I do Umrah in May 2026?
Yes, but only before the Hajj cut-off. With Hajj around 26 May 2026, the Umrah season is expected to close in early-to-mid May, so book an early-May 2026 departure and confirm the deadline with us.
Is there a UK school holiday in May for families?
Yes — the late-May (Whitsun) half-term is a week at the end of May. It can work for a family Umrah in years when it falls before the Hajj cut-off; where the dates clash, an Easter or summer trip is better.
What is the weather like for Umrah in May?
May is hot. Makkah averages 36-42°C in the day and Madinah 32-38°C, with warm nights of 25-28°C. Perform Tawaf early morning or after sunset, stay hydrated and use the Haram's air-conditioned areas.
How should I cope with the heat on a May Umrah?
Wear light, loose clothing, carry a refillable water bottle, use sunscreen and an umbrella for shade, schedule outdoor Ziyarat for early morning or evening, and rest during the midday peak. Zamzam water is freely available throughout the Haram.
Is May good value for Umrah?
Yes. May sits in the low season before the Hajj closure, so prices are well below the Ramadan and summer peaks, from around £699 per person — though the quiet mid-winter weeks of January are usually the single cheapest.
Do I need a Mahram to perform Umrah in May?
No. Since 2022, women can perform Umrah without a Mahram in any month, including May, travelling alone or in a group. See our women's Umrah packages for details.
Which UK airports offer May Umrah departures?
We arrange May departures from London, Manchester and Birmingham, with connecting options from Bradford (Leeds Bradford), Glasgow and other UK airports.
Are May Umrah packages ATOL protected?
Yes. Every flight-inclusive May Umrah package is ATOL protected, so your money and return flight are financially secured.
